A farewell to Bishop Sample

MARQUETTE, MI--   The Marquette Diocese said goodbye to Bishop Alexander Sample Sunday.

A farewell mass and reception were held at St. Peter Cathedral for Sample, who has been appointed Archbishop of Portland, Oregon.

He’ll be installed April 2, but until then will remain administrator of the Marquette Diocese.  The Diocesan College of Consultors will select a new administrator until another or a new bishop is appointed by the Pope.

Sample was bishop in the U.P. for seven years.  He was 45 years old when ordained—the youngest bishop in the U.S. at that time.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
