Fatal accident in Delta County

DELTA COUNTY, MI--   One person has been killed in a traffic crash on US-2/41 in Delta County.

Saturday around 9:20 p.m. Sheriff’s deputies and the Hannahville Police Department were dispatched to the Hyde area and found an unresponsive man at the scene. They say the 59-year-old Schaefer man had been eastbound when he crossed the centerline and hit a westbound vehicle driven by a 22-year-old woman from Bark River.

The female driver and two of her passengers were taken to St. Francis Hospital, where they were treated and released.

The male driver was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Names are not being released at this time. The accident remains under investigation.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by Hannahville Tribal Police, Escanaba Public Safety, Michigan State Police, Ford River Fire/EMS, UP Health System, Gene’s Towing and the Delta County Road Commission.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
