Former deputy charged in another child sexual abuse case

MENOMINEE, MI--   A former Menominee County Sheriff’s deputy who pleaded guilty to sexual misconduct with a teenager faces more charges in another case involving a minor.

Brian Helfert, 57, was arraigned Friday on 11 charges, including child sexually abusive activity; four counts of 1st-degree criminal sexual conduct; three counts of 3rd-degree CSC; assault with intent to commit penetration; gross indecency between males; and being a sexually delinquent person.

The charges arise from a number of incidents that allegedly happened between April, 2013 and December, 2019. The victim told police he felt compelled to come forward after he heard of Helfert’s plea and sentencing in another case last year.

Menominee County Prosecutor Jeffrey Rogg is inviting other potential victims to come forward. He says every allegation against Helfert will be fully investigated and can still be prosecuted.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
