Girl in critical condition following CR550 crash

POWELL TOWNSHIP, MI--   One person has been critically injured in a Powell Township accident involving an SUV and a semi.

Sheriff’s deputies say it happened Thursday around 9:45 p.m. on County Road 550 at County Road KCE.  A Lincoln SUV driven by Donald Fortin, 36, of Big Bay was northbound in whiteout conditions when it hit a northbound M.J. VanDamme semi truck driven by Steven Zarkowski, 58, of Marquette.

Fortin, Danielle Fortin, 33, and their 13- and 5-year-old daughters were taken to U.P. Health System Marquette.  The 13-year-old—who was not wearing a seat belt—was air lifted to the University of Michigan Pediatric Neurosurgery Department.  She is listed in critical condition.  The rest of her family were treated and released.  Zarkowski was not injured in the crash.

Deputies say alcohol was not a factor in the accident, but it appears Fortin may have been traveling too fast for conditions.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
