Gorney pleads guilty in Manistique crash case

MANISTIQUE, MI--   A Manistique woman charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, causing serious injury has pleaded guilty to the charge.

Theresa Gorney, 32, was arrested June 15 after she crossed the centerline of M-94 at the Siphon Bridge and hit an SUV containing an Illinois couple head-on.  The couple was taken to the hospital for treatment of their injuries.

At her preliminary hearing Thursday Gorney said she tried to kill herself the day before the accident by taking a bottle of Xanax and a bottle of Ambien.  She said she woke up in jail two days later.

Gorney faces up to five years in prison.  She’s set to be sentenced November 5 in Schoolcraft County Circuit Court.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
