MARQUETTE, MI-- Governor Rick Snyder has accepted an invitation to speak at Northern Michigan University’s May commencement.
Officials say he was nominated because of his support of key NMU initiatives, including the Educational Access Network, Invent@NMU, and career and technical education.
Some groups oppose Snyder’s presence at graduation, saying he’s politically controversial and the focus of the ceremony should be on the students.
NMU President Fritz Erickson says while he respects those who disagree with the selection, it’s important for the university to consider multiple opinions and perspectives.
Commencement takes place Saturday, May 5.
