Grants available to address substance abuse treatment and prevention

MARQUETTE, MI--   The Superior Health Foundation has issued a request for proposals for U.P. programs that deal with substance abuse and related issues.

Executive Director Jim LaJoie says more than $250,000 is available for projects that address substance use, especially those that include the components of education, prevention, aftercare, and potentially enforcement.

LaJoie says substance abuse has grown to epidemic proportions in the Upper Peninsula.

“It is a tremendously big problem,” he says. “There are a lot of families who have struggled with this and people are dying. And we can’t afford to just sit back and say it’s somebody else’s problem. We need to be aggressive, we need to be proactive about it and look for evidence-based solutions to reduce the incidence and ultimately improve lives.”

The grants are available to non-profit organizations across the U.P. Foundation officials hope some agencies will pool their resources and collaborate in the effort.

The application deadline is August 18. Grant recipients will be announced in late September.
