Gwinn woman injured in crash near Crossroads

SANDS TOWNSHIP, MI--   A Gwinn woman has been injured in a two-vehicle accident in Sands Township.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office says it happened Thursday around 11:45 a.m. on M-553 just south of County Road 480.  Helga Turner, 74, of Gwinn was southbound on 553 when she said her windows fogged up and impaired her vision.  Her Subaru apparently crossed into the northbound lane and hit a pickup truck driven by Anthony Erickson, 16, of Skandia.

Firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to extricate Turner from her vehicle.  She was taken to U.P. Health System Marquette for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Erickson wasn’t injured in the crash.

The accident remains under investigation.  No citations have been issued.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
