Hancock man charged with fleeing Marquette police, having weapons

MARQUETTE, MI--   A Hancock man is jailed following a chase by Marquette City Police.

Early Sunday morning officers were notified of a possible suspended driver operating a Chevy pickup. They saw the truck at South Front Street and South Lakeshore Boulevard and tried to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver sped away. Officers pursued the truck south on US-41 until the Alger County line, when they terminated the chase.

The driver was identified as Garth Jurgensen, 50, of Hancock. He was located in the Chocolay Township area early Monday morning and arrested for fleeing and eluding and reckless driving. A search of his vehicle uncovered various types of ammunition. A search warrant was also executed on Jurgensen’s hotel room in Marquette. Police discovered two firearms, one of which was loaded.

Jurgensen is charged with fourth-degree fleeing a police officer, reckless driving, two counts of resisting and obstructing an officer, felon in possession of a firearm, and felon in possession of ammunition.

He remains lodged in the Marquette County Jail on a $41,000 bond.
