Historic flooding in Houghton County

HOUGHTON COUNTY, MI--   A “thousand-year event.” That’s what the National Weather Service is calling flooding in Houghton County.

Agate Street in Houghton

Chris VanArsdale is the County Emergency Management Coordinator. He says most of the damage is found south of Calumet and north of Chassell. All state trunklines that run through the area are damaged, and dozens of county roads are completely washed out.

“Some of these are 20 or 30 feet long—the whole width of the road—and five to 10 feet deep.”

Most Houghton County residents were told to stay put, but some in the water’s path were evacuated to shelters.

VanArsdale says anyone who think their home’s water lines have been affected should boil drinking water until further notice.

The State Emergency Operations Center has been activated in Houghton and Menominee counties due to flooding and severe weather.

Officials continue to survey the scope of the damage.

Further information will be released as it becomes available.
