Interview: bluesman Johnny Burgin

Roberto Dalla Libera

Bluesman Johnny Burgin (formerly known as Rockin' Johnny) is in town tonight for a show at the Ore Dock Brewing Co. He's in town to take part in the "Tom Around the World" benefit for Tom Hyslop who is battling cancer. "Tom Around the World is a series of benefit concerts taking place around the country organized by blues musicians to show their love and appreciation for Hyslop, a blues journalist and blues champion.

Earlier in the week, Public Radio 90's Hans Ahlstrom had a chance to speak with Burgin about the blues, playing with some of Chicago's greats, and his new 'live' CD.

"Tom Around the World" kicks off at 6 tonight with music starting at 7 with the Flat Broke Blues Band. Also playing tonight are Felix Reyes & Paul Linden at 8:30, Johnny Burgin goes on at 10pm, and Devil's Elbow rounds out the night.

Hans Ahlström is the host of several programs including the daily musical variety show Weekday, the mostly straight ahead jazz show Night Studio, the self explanatory Blues Today, and the eclectic Sound Spectrum. You can also hear Hans as the local host of NPR's All Things Considered news magazine. He also helps manage Public Radio 90's web content, interviews local and visiting writers and artists, works with NMU student interns, and writes the occasional news story.
