IRS phone scam at NMU

MARQUETTE, MI--   The NMU Public Safety Department is warning the campus community about a phone scam going around.

Officers have received several complaints from students that someone using the Public Safety phone number is contacting them. The caller says they’re either an officer or a federal agent and have a warrant for the student’s arrest for tax evasion. The caller usually has a heavy accent.

Public Safety says such calls are a scam and no one should give out any personal details if they get one. They say NMU will never ask for personal information over the phone or by e-mail.

To report a call or for more information, call 227-2151.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
