Ishpeming felony assault suspect sentenced

MARQUETTE, MI--   A man who fled the scene following an assault in Ishpeming last year has been sentenced.

David Bellmer, 39, was taken into custody nearly a month after the July 31 incident on East North Street. The victim said she was able to escape the house following the assault and call 911. Bellmer left before police arrived.

Bellmer was accused of strangling the victim. He pleaded no contest to one count of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder.

Bellmer was sentenced to 3 to 8 years in prison with credit for 282 days already served.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
