Judge considering fate of Forsyth Township assault suspect

MARQUETTE, MI--   A Sawyer man accused of choking has girlfriend appeared in Marquette District Court for his preliminary exam Tuesday.

Steven Devalle, 42, was arrested earlier this month and charged with assault by strangulation and interfering with electronic communications.  The victim said he had prevented her from calling 911 during the assault.

Devalle fled the scene but was apprehended the next day after he crashed his car in Delta County.

Judge Roger Kangas has not yet decided whether the case should be bound over to Marquette Circuit Court.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
