Juvenile charged in Marquette social media prank in court

MARQUETTE, MI--   A preliminary hearing was held in Marquette County Probate Court Monday for a 13-year-old girl charged in a social media prank that allegedly prompted a boy to take his own life.

The unnamed girl is charged with malicious use of telecommunication services and using a computer to commit a crime.

Tysen Benz, 11, hung himself in his home on March 14. He was later taken off life support at an Ann Arbor hospital.

Court officials have extended the preliminary hearing to June 20.  According to WLUC-TV, Prosecutor Matt Wiese says the case could either lead to a jury trial or treatment programs.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
