Kayakers rescued from Apostle Islands during thunderstorms

APOSTLE ISLANDS NATIONAL LAKESHORE, WI--  Eleven kayakers were rescued from Wisconsin’s Apostle Islands during Monday night’s severe storms.

Three National Park Service vessels and one Coast Guard ship responded to Sand Island on a report that several kayakers had capsized and washed up on shore.

Darkness, wind, rain, lightning, and high waves made rescue operations difficult, but personnel were able to access the beach and remove the kayakers, some of whom were juveniles.

The group was taken to the NPS visitor center at Little Sand Bay, where they stayed until morning.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
