Last PIPP coal landfill to be closed

MARQUETTE, MI--   With the closure of the Presque Isle Power Plant, WE Energies will close the last of its coal combustion residual landfills in Marquette.

Over the last 25 years We Energies operated three landfills that occupy 200 acres adjacent to the plant. Two of the landfills are already closed. Long-term maintenance and monitoring is being provided by the Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy.

Fewer than eight acres of landfill remain active. Officials expect final cover will be placed over the area by October. Once closed, the 30-year post-closure period required by Michigan law will commence for all three landfills, with continued maintenance and monitoring.

The City of Marquette and WE Energies continue discussions on how the rest of the property will be used after the plant is decommissioned.
