Lost hiker found after overnight search at Pictured Rocks

MUNISING, MI--   A Wisconsin hiker has been found safe after he became lost at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

The Park Service says the 51-year-old man left the Miners Falls trail to fish along the Miners River around 3 p.m. Wednesday and didn’t return as planned.  His brother searched the area unsuccessfully before reporting him missing at 8:35 p.m.

Twenty-eight searchers responded, including three dog teams from the Michigan State Police, a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter from Traverse City, and personnel from the National Park Service, Michigan Department of Corrections, Alger County Sheriff’s Department, and Eastern Upper Peninsula Search and Rescue.

Officials say cell phone pings from the missing hiker’s phone helped narrow the search area.  He was found around 5:40 a.m. Thursday near Miners Lake.  The man was in good condition and was able to hike out under his own power.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
