Lundin to proceed with mining Eagle East

MARQUETTE COUNTY, MI--   The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality has approved a request by Eagle Mine to complete a connection to the Eagle East ore body.

In a November 20 decision the DEQ gave Eagle the go-ahead to finish a spiral ramp from the bottom of the current mine to the new deposit, which is about 1.5 kilometers east of the original deposit. The approval also covers mining of the material and use of surface facilities within the existing footprint.

Officials with Lundin Mining say construction on the tunnel should be completed in 2020. They say with Eagle East, the life of the mine will be extended by about a year.
