Madril pleads guilty to child and animal abuse

ESCANABA, MI--   An Escanaba man charged with animal torture and child abuse has pleaded guilty in both cases.

Michael Madril, 27, is accused of injuring a puppy that was found on a road in the Rock area in December. Veterinarians determined the dog had been abused. Because of the severity of his injuries the puppy had to be euthanized.

Madril was identified as a suspect in the case.

Last month Madril was looking after 5-year-old and 3-year-old brothers in a house on South 17th Street when he fell asleep. When he woke up he couldn’t find the 3-year-old. Madril said he saw the back door open and, when he looked outside, the boy was lying at the bottom of the steps wearing only a diaper.

Madril admitted to using drugs before he fell asleep.

Madril pleaded guilty Tuesday to torturing/killing an animal and 2nd-degree child abuse.

Sentencing for both charges is set for May 20.
