Man arrested for removing hat from Phil statue in Marquette

MARQUETTE, MI--   Phil Niemisto’s hat just can’t catch a break.

Marquette City Police say on September 15 they received a report that someone had removed the hat from the statue in the Pocket Park and left it at the scene. Police turned the hat over to the Marquette Downtown Development Authority.

Following an investigation a warrant was issued for James Vermeulen, 22, of Marquette. He was arrested Thursday for malicious destruction of property less than $200. The charge is punishable by up to 93 days in jail and a $500 fine, or three times the amount of damage, whichever is greater.

Vermeulen posted a $250 bond. His arraignment is set for October 11.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
