Manistique fire caused by attempted pipe-thawing

MANISTIQUE TOWNSHIP, MI--   A Manistique Township home has been damaged by fire, but no one was injured in the incident.

Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. Manistique Public Safety and Volunteer Fire officers were dispatched to a residence on West Kendall Road. They found the fire had started in the crawlspace of the single-story house. An occupant was trying to thaw frozen water pipes with a propane torch when insulation under the floor ignited.

Firefighters knocked out hot spots under the structure but were hampered by construction, which allowed the fire to travel. They were also slowed by extremely cold temperatures.

The fire was brought under control by 11 a.m. The residence remains intact but heavy smoke and fire damage is reported.

The owners were able to escape the home prior to firefighters arriving at the scene.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
