Man's hand severely injured by firework in Dickinson County

SAGOLA TOWNSHIP, MI--   Michigan State Police from the Iron Mountain Post are investigating an accident caused by fireworks.

Saturday around 8 p.m. troopers were dispatched to the Silver Lake Resort in Sagola Township on a report that a 50-year-old man had severely injured his hand. A witness said the man was setting up fireworks on their personal property when she heard a “boom” and saw the man lying on the ground. She wasn’t sure first responders would be able to find their camp, so she brought the victim to the resort.

M-95 was briefly shut down so a Valley Med Flight helicopter could land. The man was taken to UPHS-Marquette and possibly transferred to Green Bay for treatment.

The firework was described as a “mortar.”

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the incident.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
