Marquette County 'Y' CEO resigns

MARQUETTE, MI--   The CEO of the YMCA of Marquette County has resigned, effective April 4.

Lisa Coombs-Gerou has served in the top spot for more than eight years.

The Y has been dealing with money issues, and its board says immediate actions, including layoffs, are necessary.

Senior Leader and 15-year employee Jenna Zdunek has become the interim CEO.

In a release Chief Volunteer Officer Dr. Greg Jones said, “The YMCA of Marquette County is facing financial difficulties. As previously announced, Y-USA’s operational and financial assessment will take place later this month. The board of directors and senior leadership team are working together to ensure the future success of the Y and our programs.”

In a statement to WLUC-TV, Coombs-Gerou said it was an honor to serve as the Y’s CEO for eight-and-a-half years.  She said, “Every organization has opportunities and challenges, and I believed that we could work together to solve our challenges, however the Board did not; as a result, I have resigned as the CEO of the YMCA of Marquette County.”

Information about future layoffs is not available at this time.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
