Marquette parks to close

YouTube

MARQUETTE, MI--   The City of Marquette will be closing its parks in the coming week.

Mayor Jenna Smith posted a videoon YouTube Sunday morning. She said with warmer weather and the extended stay-home order people are congregating at city parks, the state park and on the bike path, ignoring social distancing. Because of that, she said “the City has made the difficult decision” to temporarily close the parks. Staff will be implementing the changes over the next few days.

“While the bike path will remain open for now, the City is working on temporary signage to remind people to stay at least six feet apart, and to take alternative routes if the path is crowded,” Smith said.

Smith suggested residents walk on a low-traffic street in their neighborhood, especially in the afternoons when the bike path is busier.

The Mayor said the CDC is now recommending everyone wear homemade cloth face masks in public places where it may be difficult to keep six feet apart, like the grocery store or when performing essential work. She said there are videos on YouTube demonstrating how to make your own face mask. Use 100 percent cotton, which is the only material that works to keep your droplets to yourself.
