MARQUETTE, MI-- Young people and adults in the City of Marquette are joining millions of people around the world in a “climate strike” Friday.
Started by teen activist Greta Thunberg, the global movement demands transformative action be taken to address climate change. Participants will leave class and work and take to streets and campuses to bring attention to the critical issue. The event takes place three days before the UN Climate Summit in New York City.
The Marquette strike will be held Friday from noon to 2 p.m. by the wildcat statue in front of Jamrich Hall at Northern Michigan University. The rally will feature various speakers from groups including the Marquette Citizens’ Climate Lobby and the Northern Climate Network. Organizers say they’re starting a campaign to urge NMU President Fritz Erickson to join 53 other university and college presidents who've signed on in support of putting a price on carbon.
