Marquette skate plaza needs your help

MARQUETTE, MI--   The Marquette Area Skate Park Committee is asking people for last-minute donations to improve the city’s skate plaza.

The Michigan Economic Development Corporation is offering crowdfunding opportunities for Michigan parks and trails, and will give matching funds if the project can raise $10,000 by Saturday.

Committee member Nheena Weyer Ittner says the plaza is a positive, safe environment in which kids can thrive.

“This is a group of kids that are oftentimes labeled and shunned.  And they’re our children.  They’re not aliens from another planet; they’re our children.  And how we treat our children and their needs today—we’re teaching them what kind of adults and citizens they’re going to be tomorrow,” she says.

Ittner says the money will be used to fix some erosion on the plaza and create elements like benches and artwork that double as skateable features.

She says the group has raised nearly half its goal, and some donors say they’ll give if the project reaches the $5,000 mark.
