Marquette suspect jailed on armed robbery charge

MARQUETTE, MI--   A Marquette man has been arrested for trying to rob a city business.

Around 6:25 a.m. Thursday the Marquette Police Department responded to a complaint at the Freedom gas station. The suspect reportedly handed an employee a note that said he was armed and to give him money. The attendant refused to comply and the suspect left the store.

Moments later the suspect was arrested on the 400 block of Washington Street without incident.

The man is identified as Milton Demarest, 59. He was in possession of a switchblade, which was not brandished at the time of the incident.

Demarest remains lodged in the Marquette County Jail on a charge of armed robbery.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
