McBroom, Markkanen want state to sell former Ojibway prison

LANSING, MI--   State Senator Ed McBroom and Representative Greg Markkanen have introduced bills that would allow the state to sell the former Ojibway Correctional Facility in Gogebic County.

The prison was closed by the Department of Corrections in 2018. McBroom says the closure meant lost jobs and diminished economic activity in the area and it’s time for the state to sell the property to a private company that would work to rebuild, repurpose and reemploy residents.

McBroom’s bill was referred to the Senate Appropriations Committee for consideration. Markkanen’s version was referred to the House Appropriations Committee.
