McBroom reacts to governor’s latest executive order on reopening U.P., state

LANSING, MI--   State Sen. Ed McBroom, R-Waucedah Township, issued the following statement on Friday, after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed Executive Orders 2020-114 and 2020-115 to reopen more regions and economic sectors in the state:

“I appreciate the governor has deemed it safe enough to let more U.P. businesses get back to work,” McBroom said. “But, like before, this decision does not match her messaging and leaves lots of questions about why and what is the scientific data. Why was it not okay for barbershops to be open less than a week ago, but suddenly now it is? Further, the guidance leaves many constituents needing specific answers and wondering if all outdoor venues are treated the same, regardless of size.

“This was yet another decision that doesn’t seem to be based on anything scientific or strategic. The positive economic news today should serve as an encouraging reminder that our country is eager to safely resume our lives.”

According to the governor’s orders, beginning June 10, the U.P. and most of northern lower Michigan will advance to Phase 5 of her “MI Safe Start Plan.” This will allow salons, movie theaters, and gyms to reopen, subject to safety protocols and procedures designed to minimize the spread of COVID-19.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
