National Guard tapped to help in MI coronavirus response

LANSING, MI--   President Donald Trump has authorized the use of the Michigan National Guard for humanitarian purposes.

That allows Governor Gretchen Whitmer to allocate and order up to 3,000 members of the Michigan Army and Air National Guard for up to 90 days to perform humanitarian missions. That includes such purposes as helping run mobile screening facilities, distributing food and medical supplies, disinfecting public spaces, and supporting public safety when required.

Whitmer announced the Michigan National Guard’s involvement in the response to COVID-19 on March 18. Since then, guard members have helped assemble and load protective gear like gowns and face shields. Others have served in the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans and the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette. They are screening employee temperatures before they enter the homes and are ensuring screening protocols are followed.

Trump approved a disaster declaration for Michigan late Friday.
