New youth center coming to Marquette Y

MARQUETTE, MI--   The YMCA of Marquette County is constructing a new Youth Center for older kids.

CEO Jenna Zdunek says the old center was made into locker rooms that can no longer be used, and youth are using the hallway for programs. She says the community needs the space because it’s such an impactful time in a kid’s life.

“This will be a great thing for the Y and for those kids that are, you know, 9 to 17, so they have a space. So really our Y is for any age,” she says.

Zdunek says the $70,000 needed for Gundlach Champion to knock down the walls and start construction have been raised. A bouldering wall will be installed, and the kids are being surveyed to see what else they want in the room. The Y will apply for grants to secure various activities to fill the center.

The new center will encourage physical activity, but will also contain quiet spaces for doing homework, playing board games, or using gaming systems.

The Y held an event to celebrate the start of construction on the new Youth Center Tuesday morning.

Zdunek says she hopes construction will be complete within the next six weeks—just in time for Summer Day Camp.
