NMU anti-stereotype campaign honored

Northern Michigan University

MARQUETTE, MI--   A Northern Michigan University campaign to raise awareness of the damaging impact of stereotypes has been honored.

The Council for the Advancement and Support of Education has given the Remove the Label campaign a Circle of Excellence Gold Award. Launched in April 2016, the program urged people to assess each other based on individual traits instead of negative assumptions, misinformation, or unfair generalizations.

An event in Jamrich Hall encouraged students to rip off Post-it notes with handwritten stereotypes from posters on display.

Award judges said they were impressed with the program’s interactive, clever approach in dealing with stereotypes and its strong social media element.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
