NMU helps the food insecure with new pantry

MARQUETTE, MI--   Northern Michigan University is opening a food pantry on campus.

Connor Loftus is vice president of the Associated Students of NMU. He says the Wildcat Food Pantry aims to be open three days a week for students, staff, and faculty. Users will fill out a non-identifying form and take what they need in a store-like atmosphere.

Loftus says the service is definitely needed at Northern.

“Last year the Food Insecurity Committee, which was created through ASNMU, ran a survey—a campus-wide survey which included faculty, staff, and students—and we found about 39 to 40 percent of students identified as food insecure,” he says.

Loftus says the pantry in Gries Hall will be stocked through donations and food drives.

The grand opening of the Wildcat Food Pantry will be held Thursday at 4 p.m. at the Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
