NMU, law enforcement address sexual assault on campus

MARQUETTE, MI--   Northern Michigan University is sponsoring a forum on sexual assault and how it’s handled by officials both on and off campus.

Sexual Assault on Trial: Campus and Community Response will feature county prosecutors, officials from NMU Public Safety and Housing and Residence Life, the Dean of Students Office and others.  They’ll discuss various scenarios from campuses across the country, then take questions and input from the audience.

Beth Roberts is a member of Northern’s Ending Sexual Violence Grant Committee.  She says the forum will highlight policies the university and police have in place to deal with sexual assault.

“That’s kind of what we want to get out there, and get the community and the campus involved so they know exactly what NMU and the community have in place to take care of campus sexual assaults since it is such a huge issue right now,” she says.

Roberts feels students are reporting such incidents more readily than in previous years, especially since NMU does a good job in handling them.

“I think students just need to be aware that our campus is not one of those campuses that does not do a good job.  I think we’ve made the proper policy adjustments as things come up and take care of students in the appropriate way.”

Sexual Assault on Trial takes place Tuesday, April 5 at 7 p.m. in Jamrich Hall room 1100.  It’s free and open to the public.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
