NMU locks down, goes remote following statewide COVID order

MARQUETTE, MI--   As a result of the most recent MDHHS health order and with only seven days left in the fall semester, Northern Michigan University is switching to remote learning only.

NMU President Fritz Erickson says most university activities already have a remote option so campus hasn’t been thrown into chaos.

All employees who can work from home must do so by 12:01 a.m. Wednesday. And officials have asked students to sequester until they leave for the holiday break. That means they should stay in their place of residence as much as they can between now and their departure from campus, leaving only for class, work, to get food or for medical appointments. That aims to reduce the risk of bringing COVID-19 home with them.

Northern is closing most of its facilities to the public, except for the Northern Center lower level, Hedgcock, the health center, the library, Temaki and Tea and Smoothie King—which will offer drive-through services only—and the NMU Police Department.

Officials hope to reopen campus on Monday, January 11.
