NMU President receives new contract, bonus

Northern Michigan University

MARQUETTE, MI--   The Northern Michigan University Board of Trustees has recognized President Fritz Erickson’s “outstanding performance” with a new contract and bonus.

At its meeting Friday morning the Board approved a new five-year contract that places Erickson’s base salary at $385,000. It also includes a $50,000 performance-based bonus for goals achieved in 2017-2018.

Board Chair Robert Mahaney says Erickson has led two consecutive years of double-digit enrollment growth at a time of decline in high school graduates in Michigan. He adds Erickson has steered Northern to significant progress in developing nationally recognized new academic programming, expanding the wireless Educational Access Network across the U.P., and increasing fundraising this year by 34 percent.

Mahaney says the contract makes NMU competitive at the state and national level, but keeps compensation below the median for university presidents in Michigan.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
