NMU to train Subaru technicians as part of its curriculum

MARQUETTE, MI--   Northern Michigan University is partnering with Subaru to become the first Subaru-U in the Upper Peninsula.

NMU will infuse the corporation’s web-based training into its two-year automotive service technology curriculum. Officials say it will also enhance hands-on learning with the donation of three vehicles by Subaru of America. Students will graduate with an industry credential that qualifies them to work at any Subaru dealership.

Steve Sanderson is a service manager at Fox Motors Marquette and is on NMU’s Automotive Technology Advisory Committee. He says dealerships are struggling to find qualified technicians to fill the workforce and replace retirees. He recommended Subaru-U to Northern as a way to grow its own skilled service technicians.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
