Nurses: Schon's departure is progress, but some things still unclear

IRON MOUNTAIN, MI--   Nurses at Dickinson County Healthcare System say the resignation of CEO John Schon is a step in the right direction, but questions remain.

Schon tendered his resignation Tuesday. The nurses called for Schon to step down in September, citing financial damage done to DCHS under his leadership.

Former Congressman Bart Stupak is with the law firm Venable, LLC, which is helping the hospital reorganize. He has recommended to the hospital board of trustees the appointment of a Chief Restructuring Officer/interim CEO.

Schon has agreed to serve in a consulting role.

Nurses are raising concerns about Schon’s new role and how the next leader will be chosen.

No details about how much Schon is being paid as a consultant have been released.

The nurses say they hope his departure means greater accountability and transparency moving forward.

Schon’s retirement is effective December 31.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
