Officials decide against gate at Silver Lake Basin site

MARQUETTE COUNTY, MI--   The Department of Natural Resources will not put a gate at the Silver Lake Basin boating access site in Marquette County.

Earlier this year the DNR said increased popularity of the site had created problems like shoreline camping, littering and human waste. Officials proposed putting a gate up and making the site walk-in only, but input from boaters and anglers indicated a gate would make access more difficult.

Suggested changes included the addition of a gravel ramp, improved parking and a vault toilet. Officials are discussing potential funding sources for making the improvements.

In the meantime, DNR law enforcement officers will address any potential problems as they arise.
