Officials trying to determine cause of Calumet fire

Village of Calumet

CALUMET, MI--   Officials still don’t know what caused the fire that destroyed three buildings on 5th Street in Calumet over the weekend.

The blaze was first reported around 10:50 p.m. Friday. It quickly spread and engulfed 108 to 120 5th Street. At least 30 people were displaced.

The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office has taped off the area of the fire and is treating the site as a crime scene. Anyone caught trespassing or taking items can be prosecuted. The Michigan State Police Fire Marshal and agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives are assisting in the investigation.

Anyone who was on or near the 100 block of 5th Street on Friday around 10:45 p.m. and saw or heard anything suspicious is asked to call the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office at 906-482-0055 or send a message on Facebook.
