One killed in crash near Sault Ste. Marie

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   Northbound I-75 in Chippewa County is reopen, following a fatal crash this morning.

Around 2:20 a.m. Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the scene near 6 Mile Road. Early reports indicate a young Kalamazoo man was driving and may have fallen asleep. The vehicle drove into the median and rolled over multiple times.

The passenger—a young Sault Ste. Marie female—did not survive.

I-75 was closed for about three hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.

No names are being released at this time.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Department and the Border Patrol.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
