Park Service says Isle Royale wolf has died

ISLE ROYALE NATIONAL PARK, MI--   One of the wolves relocated from Minnesota to Isle Royale National Park has died.

The National Park Service says earlier this fall four wolves from the Grand Portage Chippewa Reservation were collared and released on the island. Park biologists have been tracking them daily using GPS technology.

Staff became concerned when location data for the male wolf indicated a mortality signal, despite the fact the collar malfunctioned and broadcast a mortality signal from the start.

In October the collar indicated the wolf’s movements were confined to a small location. Park personnel found and recovered the wolf’s carcass. There was no obvious cause of death or indication another wolf had killed it.

The animal will be taken to a wildlife health lab in Madison, Wisconsin for a necropsy. Results are expected in December.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
