Pedestrian hit, killed by car in Marquette County

HUMBOLDT TOWNSHIP, MI--   A Palmer man was killed when he was hit by a car in Humboldt Township Thursday night.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office says the accident happened around 10 on M-95 about three miles south of US-41.  Cory Derocha, 33, was a passenger in a northbound car with a friend when they began to argue. The friend pulled the vehicle onto the side of the road. Derocha got out and either walked or ran directly into the path of a southbound vehicle driven by Janey Christiansen, 19, of Iron Mountain. Derocha was struck head-on and became trapped underneath.

Marquette County Sheriff’s Rescue 131 used equipment to lift the vehicle off of Derocha. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies say icy roads and low visibility were factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
