Pedestrians hit in Chocolay Township

CHOCOLAY TOWNSHIP, MI--   No life-threatening injuries are reported, after two pedestrians were hit by a car in Chocolay Township.

The accident happened around 7 p.m. Wednesday on U.S. 41, just south of the M-28 intersection near Carmen Drive.

Township Police say Louis Kowalski, 28, and Jamie Skytta, 25—both of Marquette—had just been dropped off by a MarqTran bus and were trying to cross the poorly lit highway when a northbound vehicle driven by William Belanger, 57, of Marquette struck them.  Belanger stopped and administered first aid, along with several witnesses.

Kowalski and Skytta were taken to UP Health System Marquette for treatment, but there’s no word on their condition.

Police say alcohol was not a factor in the accident, and no citations were issued.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
