Peter White Library to seek bond for repairs, improvements

MARQUETTE, MI--   Peter White Public Library is putting a $4.2 million capital improvement bond on the City of Marquette’s August 8 ballot.

Library Director Andrea Ingmire says the money would go toward four areas: repair of the 1904 building façade; updates to HVAC, lighting, and building access; updates to technology, safety, and furnishings; and reorganization of space to create more meeting rooms.

Ingmire says while the library does a good job of providing a range of services to meet public needs, it could always do better.

“The more that we can do that, the more that we can focus in and provide the services, the spaces, and meet the needs of our community, I think the better we all are as a whole, as a community,” she says.

The proposed bond would have a 0.4976 millage rate. That means a homeowner whose house has a market value of $150,000 and taxable rate of $75,000 would pay about $35.97 cents a year, or about $3.00 a month.

The bond to expand the old library expires this summer and the new bond would begin in 2018.

A new survey to gather public input on library plans and additional information can be found on the library website, pwpl.info.
