Plane loses power, crashes near Sawyer Airport

SAWYER, MI--   Two people are safe after their plane crash-landed near a field about five miles east of Sawyer International Airport Monday night.

Michigan State Police from the Negaunee Post say the crash site was on County Road 545 near Falstedt Road. The 48-year-old pilot says he lost engine power while in flight around 8:30 p.m. and had to make an emergency landing. He says he overshot a field he was aiming for, landed on CR 545, veered off the roadway and hit some trees.

The pilot and his 8-year-old son were located outside of the plane, uninjured.

The aircraft was towed from the scene to a hangar at Sawyer. The Federal Aviation Administration is expected to conduct an inspection of the plane.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
