DRUMMOND ISLAND, MI (AP)-- A missing U.S. Marine died of a self-inflicted injury after exchanging gunfire with two federal agents helping search for him.
MLive.com reports that state police said Tuesday an autopsy confirmed the cause of death for Aaron Furness of Woodbridge, Virginia.
The 38-year-old Furness was found dead Thursday inside a cabin on Michigan's Drummond Island. More details of his injury were not reported.
Police have said Furness was reported missing Wednesday and was believed to be in the area. U.S. Border Patrol agents discovered footprints and tracked them to a cabin. They were shot at and took cover while returning gunfire.
Furness then retreated into the cabin.
The island is in Lake Huron in Chippewa County's Drummond Township.
