Possibly ill raccoons seen in Chocolay Township

CHOCOLAY TOWNSHIP, MI--   Chocolay Township Police are cautioning people about raccoons that are behaving strangely in the area.

Chief Greg Zyburt says his department has received numerous calls from people who have seen the normally nocturnal animal in the middle of the day.  The animals seem lethargic and appear to be ill.

Some suspect animals have been euthanized and sent to the Michigan Department of health, where they will be tested for possible canine distemper or rabies.

Zyburt and the DNR are recommending that pet owners keep their animals’ vaccinations up to date.

Anyone observing unusual behavior in wild animals should contact their local police department or the Department of Natural Resources.
