UP prosecutor supports MCOLES expansion

MARQUETTE, MI--   Marquette County Prosecutor Matt Wiese says he supports Governor Whitmer’s expansion of the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards.

In an executive order last week, the governor added to the commission the director of the Michigan Department of Civil Rights and three residents from outside the law enforcement community.

Wiese says in light of the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police and the resulting protests, it’s important to recognize the need for different perspectives. He says it’s also important to recognize that the vast majority of police officers professionally protect and serve their communities every day.

Wiese hopes expansion of the commission will address concerns raised by recent events and support best practices that focus on community-oriented approaches to working with citizens.
